- X creators are lying to you
X creators are lying to you
here's why you shouldn't listen to them:
I’ve been obsessed with model-based wealth creation lately.
Instead of focusing on the hot new thing,
You learn and integrate timeless mental principles that will make you money no matter where you are, who you are and what you do.
There are hundreds of mental models you can integrate into your business (and life)
And a mental model isn’t always a system of processing.
Sometimes, it can be reminders - realizations and mindset switches.
And the biggest one I’ve discovered:
Don’t listen to rich people giving you advice on how to get rich…
If they got rich from giving that advice.
“You don’t wanna learn how to be rich from someone who makes their money by telling people how to make money. It’s suspect.”
— Naval Ravikant
The great guru recession of ‘24.
“I’ll help you scale to X”
“I’ll grow your brand by Y”
…etc
These are promises you see plastered around X everyday.
But the truth is?
The results they provide aren’t special.
Most of the time, they got them through luck and momentum.
And now they’re selling you their used lottery ticket numbers.
You can see this by looking at the “growth gurus” of X.
For a period of time, some clients of people like Sean Canela* started copying their mentors and the frameworks they used.
*nothing specific against Sean Canela :)
Every tweet looked the same.
Every brand looked the same.
There was no creativity. No genuine business.
Just people trying to suck money out of you for a few overused growth tactics.
And it was working.
Until a few creators (me included) started picking up on the B.S.
The accounts quickly rebranded, lost the spotlight, or straight up quit because there was no authentic business or ideas behind them.
Poof.
The reason they died so quickly is because the mentors were giving used lottery ticket numbers.
What worked for them were the processes they gave their clients.
(a disaster of a concept)
Their clients didn’t have any creativity, business skillset or experience.
They just had “get-paid-quick” models from their mentors.
And when they failed, they were left with nothing.
Avoid taking money advice from people who made their money telling people how to make money.
You’re a pawn in their pyramid.
I have two cases for this:
Case one against the gurus: exhaustion.
I have a friend who’s one of the best writers on X.
Recently, he fired all of his coaching clients, despite him having massive success.
The reason is simple.
It’s exhausting trying to make money coaching people by teaching people how to make money coaching:
1/ You’ll be burnt out through the immense load you’re put through by your mentors (no matter how persuasive the 4h workday sounds)
2/ You’ll get tired of the clients you hire because you have to now teach them YOUR skillset from the ground up.
3/ You’re now obligated to give each client, each follower and each lead specific, personalized value every day.
“Just remember that in any random process, if you run it long enough, and enough people participate in it, you will always get every possible outcome (including getting rich.)”
— Babak Nivi
Case two: the skillset recession.
No matter how interesting “WiFi money” sounds…
The truth is this:
Your wealth shouldn’t rely on the internet.
It should rely on your skillset.
Without a skillset, you won’t be able to scale your business.
Sure, you can get to 4-figures by writing persuasive posts and giving overused models as a product.
But in the end:
You won’t get stellar client results that people like Dan West, Audrey Lo or Kieran Drew get (actual, experienced businessmen)
You won’t develop a broad and useful skillset for future business endeavors
You won’t get reached out to by actual business owners to work for them (which has happened to me on MULTIPLE occasions because I’ve proved skillset competency)
The next time you see a guy teaching you how to get rich when his money hasn’t been made anywhere else…
Remember that he hasn’t made money… ANYWHERE ELSE.
It’s impossible to know if he’s actually qualified.
And most of the time:
He’s selling you used lottery ticket numbers.
The only thing they’re good at is twisting words. A lot.
In the words of Naval Ravikant:
“You’re literally becoming dumber by reading them. You’re burning neurons.”
What to do instead:
The next time you identify a guru:
Lacks creativity
Flexes the same metrics (obnoxiously)
Makes money teaching people how to make money
Remember this:
They. Are. Selling. You. Used. Lottery. Ticket. Numbers.
What worked for them for a short period of time,
Won’t work for you. Ever.
Instead?
Build mental models.
Timeless ones. Ones you can integrate and use to solve any problem you have, professionally or personally.
This way, you can make money reliably and purposefully.
Not by getting coached by a guru.
And if you want more info on mental models…
I’ve turned my 5 favorites into a document (with explanations)
